Different Types of Candles

When it comes to candles, there are several different types. Of course there are scented candles and utility candles, but what is the difference between a jarred candle and a votive? Keep reading to find out all about the different style of candles available today.
Pillar and taper candles
These types of candles are most common-place at a table setting. Pillar candles are well-named as they look like miniature pillars. They are thick and cylindrical in shape and burn slowly. Taper candles are long, thin and melt much faster but they have a special kind of elegance that some people desire. For both types, it is necessary to have an appropriate heat-resistance candle holder to catch falling wax and guard against overheating.
Container candles
There are filled containers that are commonly used to sell aromatherapy and scented candles; these are basically jars that have the wax poured directly into them. These are mess-free and safe to use, as the fire is contained in the jar. Even so, glass can get hot and shatter, so it is recommended that you only burn container candles an hour or so at a time. Most of the time, you can find gel candles in this category, although the gel substance is thick enough to stand alone. Votive candles are not strictly sold in containers, but it is typical to burn them in small containers as they melt easily. Votives are soft, usually scented candles that stand about 2 1/2 inches high.
Tea-light and luminaries
Tea-lights are most commonly used for oil burners, potpourri pots and decorative candle holders. They are tiny, only meant to burn a few hours, and covered in a thin, metal, cylinder holder. These are used outdoors in jack-o-lanterns or other displays. Luminary candles are made for outdoor use only and set in containers that are filled with sand.
Specialty candles
Specialty candles are crafted into just about any form imaginable, and typically are not meant for burning. They are beautiful wax statues with a wick. Floating candles are also specialty candles that burn while floating in a body of water. These are shaped as lily-pads, roses or other flowers, but the shape is only limited to the maker’s imagination.
When choosing what type of candle to purchase, keep in mind the mood you are trying to create. Remember, everyone looks better under soft, dim light. Candles are brilliant and divine, and add a bit of magic to any situation.
